Six years after its send off, No Man's Sky has almost arrived at another milestone, version 4.0. This comes as Hi Games' cosmic sandbox prepares to expand onto one more stage, Nintendo Switch, on October 7.

A Switch presentation may not feel planet-shaking to long-lasting players on PC, yet the 4.0 update will carry various changes to No Man's Sky no matter what stage you play on. And while this update probably won't look as emotional as the expansion of living ships or ridable sandworms or cosmic whales, there's still a ton to it.

"Individuals are showing up, new players, and we sort of need to clean up our house," Sean Murray said when we talked over Zoom about the 4.0 update last week. One of the concerns for Hi Games was not just the way that the game will appear to new players on Switch yet to returning players on PC who might have been away for some time, possibly even years.

"Something I see online occasionally, individuals will say, 'I like the game, however it feels overpowering to return,'" said Murray. "And I need [both new and returning players] to say 'This makes sense. This feels cohesive, and it doesn't feel like a lot of disparate updates.'

"And so we dove into that a ton. On the off chance that you return to the game [in 4.0] there's really a log where you have a summary of the story so far," Murray said. "We have a data entry that will gather together all that you've accomplished so far, all that you've opened, all of that, and give you more information on it, so that you can dive into it."

Long-lasting players who might feel like they've accomplished all that will find a new source of inspiration in update 4.0. While No Man's Sky doesn't have level caps, it does have features like excursion milestones that track all that from outsider encounters to battle stats to time spent on planets with outrageous climate. These milestones have been expanded in 4.0, giving players new goals to go for the gold. Inventory has been "streamlined" to make it easier for new players, yet Murray said it's "also massively increased," so players who have opened the most extreme measure of storage slots will actually want to get much more.
